this lamp, taken to flicker,
that young star, blazing blue,
i - worn, a bit torn,
you - for all purposes, new.

despite your few
nicks and scratches,
your soul - flawless,
your heart - matches.

global warming,
lingering wars,
this damaged world
is now yours.

we pass a torch
low on fuel,
sadly neglected
by a delusional generation...

[for a special friend]

Beautiful verse, Pip. Loving and hopeful, but equally foreboding, almost apologietic. An inspiring work. "We do not inherit the earth from our forefathers. We borrow it from our children."

thank you, Jim. i suppose there
are members of every generation
who, as they "pass the torch", do
it with apology, because even the
most sucessful fail in some ways.

the evolution of society is not a
perfect upward slope.

Worse still, we goofed and gave the crazy bitch the matches (just to shut her up) and now she's run off with them and is lighting people's feet on fire to see if they're witches...

HAH.

I shouldn't make light when you've pulled out such truth, but I can't help it: the worse things are, the more I need'a find a laugh. And this hit too close to home to NOT make a joke...

it isn't quite so bad as we tend
to think of it - and feel guilty.
there are generations in families,
but no generations in society as
it is thought of. there is a
sliding forty year overlap, and
the fault lies from here through
bad decisions all the way back to
the end of WWII. avoidance of
responsibility seems to be a built
in function of "civilization".

humans just selfishly suck...

wow, beautiful, pip. It's one of my very favourites among your poems. I love the double-meaning in that 'matches'.

(I'll return later to fav, same old prob!)
