[the story as perhaps believed by some]
satisfied - He wiped His hands
He shrugged - He strode away
good or bad results - no fault
not His - no more He'll say
just one explosive word - just one
"Evolve!" - His uttered rubric
so began expanding morphing
space - the cosmic fabric
molecules from atoms form
exploding into elements
gravity and light - and dark
and time - allowing all of THIS
as eon's trial came self-aware
new mind supposed a quest of Him
long gone and doing other things
as if He'd never even been?
contriving reasons more than cause
evolving nuance - asking "why?"
that He ever truly was
our grasping need before WE die
all time we weren't - though now we are
alive today - tomorrow not
too soon to go - so now we fear
the "taking of all that we've got
and all we're ever gonna have"
- plus knowing not
- from whence
- or how
- we leave

Passing Ships
It was just like you to show up late. Honestly, it was just like you. It was the hottest day of the year so far and every green space was full of people trying to get their fix. Daylight junkies. When you live beneath grey clouds for most of your life it starts to take its toll and you take your highs where you can get them.
I was a bundle of nerves, as I always was when it came to you, picking at grass and trying to pretend that the fact you were late was totally cool. Instinct told me differently and I knew as soon as you graced me with your presence that things had changed. It was written all over your face - guilt, guilt, guilt - but I w

The Poison Time Capsule
there’s a strange shape tangled deep in the thorny embrace of depression’s thicket it slid down the wooded side of the lot where I tend to cast things I don’t know what to do with there’s a stream just past the gully’s decline, but i normally never make it past the tangle all the kids i grew up with that I’ve outlived, bump along there face down in the lazy flow of its shallows a slow trickle that still draws the salmon home; slipping upstream, between those bodies that were, perhaps, called back too memories float, earth erodes and the poison time capsule of boyhood cruelty dissolves slowly against the tongue there’s a strange sense of end tangled deep in its taste like a long spent summer day’s dark walk home

Do You Love Me?
He’s four and he’s asking Gino, who does, but who answers in licks and wags and whose shims and shakes are themselves a verbal communication. They’re on the sofa and I don’t want to disturb them but I can’t stop watching or listening. Over and over he asks, and the ‘good boy’ plunks his hunky head onto his little lap- pawing his arm to try to tell him. You do love me, don’t you Gino? he says as he holds his jowls in his hands; and the honesty in both their eyes leads to a fluffy kiss on his forehead. And I, need to press both my hands, hard to my chest and wonder how these two creatures just saved my life. © Linda R. O’Connell
