on greeting the out-lander by *alapip "puts folks in the shoes of 'Out-landers' through its comparison of how we deal (or don't deal) well with other cultures ourselves. It shook up my complacency in a very good way" (suggester's words).

Literature Text
it requires a benign acquiescence
to regard the perception of others,
so much different from one's own:
ours is not to wear their shoes,
but to welcome the foreign feet
that settle here - far from home,
where we at best would interlope,
feel at odds, might barely cope,
yet should gain at least a modicum
of empathy, grace and decorum...
as that humble, hopeful immigrant
has done.

Dreamers
She reminds me that she's a dreamer
Her right hand delicately grips a pencil
as she's working equations on a TI-89 with her left
She looks up at me and smiles,
and there are stars, meteors,
spanning across the cosmos of her expression
her countenance reminds me to look up at the chalkboard
that's attempting to teach me how

like cars parallel parked on a side road
her equations confuse me

“She's doing it again!” I called, and my husb

Before Daybreak
Couldn't sleep – 4 AM may be
Too early for coffee, but

That way. Dickens, Green Mansions,
Shakespeare, bleak Russians – shadows
Can watch them for a while…
The night air's warm—a slow block
Of rain-sloshed concrete later
And I've made it. – Get dark roast
Pick a table not too close
To the counter, then sit back.
Watch life eddy around you...
Whoever sat here last must
Have dropped the tract—Jesus Saves.
We're story-weaving creatures.
This tale? It's nine-tenths thunder—
Granite certainty. Can't see
Much past my face. But who knows?
That might just

TOTAL DD SURPRISE!
thank you Lisa, beeinthebottle , for suggesting.
thank you to neurotype for featuring.
as poetry, i'm amazed for it to be considered 'DD quality'.
but, i am proud for it to be recognized for what it says about our relationship with the immigrant.
lets pass that legislation!
